Breaking: NHL goalie market heating up as another lands on waivers

The three-goalie has come to an end in Raleigh, as the Carolina Hurricanes placed netminder Scott Darling on waivers on Thursday.

NHL insider Pierre LeBrun was the first to report that Hurricanes general manager Don Waddell confirmed Darling was headed to the waiver wire at noon today.

Darling is in the second year of a four-year, $16.6 million contract and will report to the AHL on Friday if he goes unclaimed before tomorrow's deadline.

The veteran netminder missed the first month of the season due to a lower-body injury and didn't see much action between the pipes once he returned. The Hurricanes have put up an impressive record since the start of the regular calendar and  Petr Mzarek and Curtis McElhinney have put up better numbers. The 29-year-old has a 2-4-1 record with a 3.14 goals-against average and a 0.892 save percentage over seven games this season.

McElhinney, who was claimed off waivers from the Toronto Maple Leafs at the start of the season, has won his last four starts for the Hurricanes and seems primed to be the starter in Carolina at the moment.

Over 125 career games with the Chicago Blackhawks and Hurricanes, Darling has posted a 54-42-17 record with a 2.70 GAA and a 0.909 save percentage.

The Philadelphia Flyers, who recently fired their general manager Ron Hextall for his lack of solutions in between the pipes, could have a quick look at Darling to see if he could be a short-term option for them.

However, because of his latest mediocre performances and his hefty contract, many believe Darling will head back to the AHL where he will need to build a better confidence in himself to get back in the right direction.

According to the information provided by Cap Friendly, Darling's contract includes a no trade clause with a 15-team trade list. However, only a no-movement clause prohibits a team from placing a player on waivers, or assigning him to the minors, without the players consent.

"As a result, Darling has no control over the waiver placement or being loaned."

The Hurricanes have also placed forward Valentin Zykov on waivers for the purpose of reassignment. The forward took part in 13 games with Carolina this season, collecting one assist. Acquired from the Los Angeles Kings on Feb. 28, 2016, the 23-year-old has totaled 11 points (4g, 7a) in 25 career NHL games with the Canes.
