NHL Player Safety has announced that they’ve fined Philadelphia Flyers forward James van Riemsdyk $5,000, the maximum allowable, for high sticking Los Angeles Kings defensemen Alec Martinez.

Martinez was injured on the play initially, but returned to finish the game.

The 29 year old van Riemsdyk, who returned to the Flyers organization as a free agent this past offseason, has 13 goals and 25 points in 38 games with the suddenly surging Flyers.

As for Martinez, the 31 year old defenseman has just three goals and 11 points in 40 games for the Kings, but has historically been a 30+ point Dman. It’s expected that the Kings will seek to fetch a return for him on the trade market ahead of this month’s NHL Trade Deadline.
