The National Hockey League's Department of Player Safety had a tough decision on it's hands today, and no matter which way they eventually ruled there was likely going to be one group of fans that was unhappy.

On Monday night San Jose Sharks veteran Joe Thornton knocked out Washington Capitals star forward T.J. Oshie with a devastating hit to the head, but whether or not Thornton was to blame caused a rift among NHL fans.

One side argued that Thornton had the time to slow down or even stop completely before connecting with Oshie's head. The other side however pointed to the fact that Oshie fell to his knees as Thornton was delivering the hit.

The NHL appears to have sided with the latter half however as though no official announcement has been made, Sportsnet insider John Shannon is reporting that Thornton will not be suspended. In fact Shannon reports that Thornton is "clear" which appears to indicate he won't even be fined.
