Breaking: NHL ignores blatant head shot from Pens/Sens game 5
Keystone Press

In the closing moment’s of yesterday’s 7-0 victory for the Pittsburgh Penguins over the Ottawa Senators, Sens forward Tommy Wingels delivered a VICIOUS elbow to the head of Pens forward Scott Wilson.

The blatant attempt to injure was somehow missed by the game’s officials, but nevertheless analysts expected the NHL to be swift in acting against Wingels. Most experts predicted a suspension of at least a game, maybe longer. So, what’s in store for Wingels? Well… apparently nothing. The NHL confirmed this morning that there will be no disciplinary hearing for Wingels and he’s expected to be available for game 6 tomorrow in Ottawa.

Wow. For a league that’s apparently concerned with concussions and ridding the game of dangerous hits to the head, how can they not consider Wingels’ chicken-wing elbow a suspendible offense? Wilson left the ice immediately and was unable to join his team’s celebration. Head coach Mike Sullivan confirmed as well that he did not join the team for practice this morning.

What’s your take? Does Wingels deserve to sit for a game? Is the NHL out to lunch in their non-decision in this matter? Or, is it all a little too overblown? Once again, the NHL Department of Player Safety leaves us with more questions than answers.
