Breaking: NHL insider reveals stunning details of Karlsson's new contract.

I must admit, I am a little worried for the San Jose Sharks when it comes to this deal.

On Monday morning TSN National Hockey League insider Bob McKenzie dropped some huge news when he revealed that all signs pointed to superstar defenseman Erik Karlsson signing a long term deal with the San Jose Sharks. That news coincided with a report made by Sportsnet's National Hockey League insider Elliotte Friedman over the weekend in which Friedman revealed that Karlsson had receive a blockbuster contract offer from the San Jose Sharks, an offer that would make him one of the richest players in the NHL.

From Friedman's 31 Thoughts:

We are getting close to clarity on Erik Karlsson and San Jose. The Sharks have worked this hard. It is believed they’ve made him an offer that will challenge, if not surpass, Drew Doughty’s extension from last summer. Three weeks ago, I thought Karlsson was going back east for family reasons and a travel schedule that’s easier on the body. San Jose needs a decision, conversations have intensified, and I think they’ve got a shot.

Well now it appears that even more details of Friedman's report have been corroborated by other insiders from around the National Hockey League as TSN NHL insider Pierre LeBrun has just dropped a bombshell of his own. According to LeBrun the Sharks have indeed broken the bank for Karlsson with LeBrun reporting that the deal will surpass the one signed between Drew Doughty and the Los Angeles Kings. That is a staggering number for a player who's body has seemingly fallen apart over the course of the past few seasons.

"Further to Bob McKenzie's report on Erik Karlsson, I'm told the deal is indeed done: 8 years max deal, north of $11 million per season... the Sharks with a huge move in keeping the superstar D from hitting the market," wrote LeBrun on Monday morning.

As I mentioned earlier I am a little worried for the San Jose Sharks on this one, but nonetheless no concern will overshadow the fact that you have just signed one of the NHL's top defensemen for the foreseeable future. Of course should Karlsson's health issues continue to be a problem however, this is a deal that we might look back on very differently with the benefit of hindsight.
