He's widely regarded as one of the greatest defensemen to ever play the game of hockey, but he wants to be remembered as much more than just that.

Since stepping away from play on the ice former National Hockey League defenseman Chris Pronger has become one of the figureheads of the NHL's Department of Player Safety, a move that surprised many. Pronger however didn't just jump into the role so he would have a job after hockey however, this was from the very beginning a stepping stone to his ultimate goal, become an NHL GM.

“That’s another reason why I took this job,” Pronger said recently via the Hockey News. “It kept me in the game, watching games, studying the league and learning the league from the standpoint of all the new faces. From the time I finished five years ago to now I would say three quarters of the league has rolled over. That’s a lot of churn in five years. You’ve got to stay current.”

Pronger has used his newfound position to attend board of governor meetings, and get a better feel for the day to day life on an NHL GM, something he believes will prepare him to take on the mantle himself one day.

“I get to understand the business side of the game,” Pronger said. “One thing I have gotten much better at is listening instead of always trying to talk and then waiting to talk again. You listen and focus on what you are listening to and then figure out what questions you have. The other thing is, don’t be afraid to ask questions. If you have questions, ask them.”

We would certainly love to see Pronger as an NHL GM, it would at the very least make for a very interesting story to follow, but we doubt that rival GMs would be as thrilled to have a infamous intimidate like Pronger to negotiate with.
