Breaking: NHL officially announces a new penalty for this upcoming season.

The National Hockey League is set to introduce a new rule, one that will come with a new penalty for teams that find themselves on the wrong end of it.

Last season the offside challenge created a great deal of controversy around the league, with many complaining that it slowed down the pace of the game, however now there will be a severe penalty for an incorrect challenge.

According to a report from Mark Lazerus of the Chicago Sun Times, teams who challenge a goal on the basis of an offside and fail to win that challenge will be assessed a two-minute minor penalty, a potentially major disadvantage when you consider a goal has just got the other way as well.

This of course will open the door to even more controversy should fans feel that the wrong call was made on the offside challenge, and their team given a two-minute minor on top of what will also be viewed as an unfair goal against that very same team.

That being said, this also will likely result in far fewer offside challenges as head coaches will want to be sure about the call on the ice being reversed to avoid the penalty.
