Breaking: NHL players receive compensation for World Cup, and it's not good.

While the National Hockey League has not made an official announcement regarding player salaries for the 2016 World Cup of Hockey, a very credible source has just revealed those numbers to the public. 

TSN's Rick Westhead, arguably the best business insider in the hockey world, has just revealed that player's received their salaries yesterday. For player's who attended the tournament the payout was in the amount of $86,000 while players who did not attend received $10,000 and both these numbers are before taxes are taken into consideration. 

Even without factoring in taxes, James Mirtle of the Athletic has stated that this is "much, much less per game than what a star would make playing a regular season NHL game."

To make matters worse, Westhead reports that after taxes players' who played will receive less than $50,000 in compensation and players who did not play will receive less than $5,000.

While to members of the public these may seem like large amounts of money, and they are, to a player earning millions in the National Hockey League it may not seem like a worthwhile endeavor. Should star players not see the utility in participating in future World Cup tournaments, this could seriously damage the NHL's business model around those events.
