Two captains on the same team.

We have a very strange announcement to report.

The process surrounding how each individual team in the National Hockey League selects their captain is usually kept away from the public, and short of a controversial announcement the public never really seems to mind, but this has to be considered one of those controversial announcements.

According to an official release from the Carolina Hurricanes organization, the team has selected two players to be their captain next season, a move that will effectively make them co-captains.

From the Hurricanes announcement:

Carolina Hurricanes Head Coach Bill Peters today announced the team's captains for the 2017-18 season. Defenseman Justin Faulk and forward Jordan Staal will serve as co-captains this season and forward Jeff Skinner will serve as alternate captain. Staal will primarily serve as captain at home and Faulk will primarily serve as captain on the road.

It's a bizarre decision to say the least, and one that raises questions about leadership in that locker room considering that neither man was able to secure the role for himself ahead of the other.

While we could be wrong here, we don't think this is a situation that is expected to last in the long-term for the Hurricanes.
