Breaking: NHL team announces one of most beloved players will not return
Keystone Press

In a strange announcement, the Montreal Canadiens have announced that veteran defenseman Andrei Markov will not be returning to the team in 2017-18.

Without a contract for 2017-18, Markov has engaged in bizarre negotiations  with the team since hitting the open market on July 1st. The 38 year-old blue liner has elected to forgo any representation this offseason, electing to negotiate a deal himself with the club. First his financial demands were deemed unrealistic by the team’s general manager Marc Bergevin, then Markov was accused of using the Philadelphia Flyers as leverage for a new deal in Montreal. Flyers general manager Ron Hextall denies that any negotiations or conversations too place. Earlier yesterday a report from Eric Engels indicated that Markov had in fact not engaged in negotiations with any other NHL teams besides the Canadies.

What the heck is going on here? Hopefully a press conference scheduled for later today will bring to light some more details.
