Detail that might explain his team's early elimination

Sharks General Manager Doug Wilson released the following update regarding Joel Ward on Friday evening:

Joel was dealing with a minor shoulder injury last season and, once the season ended, had a choice to either rehab the injury or to have a surgical procedure,” Wilson said. “Joel opted to proceed with the surgical procedure, which was completed successfully, and he is expected to be ready for the start of the 2017 season.”

Joel Ward collected 29 points (10 goals, 19 assists) in 78 regular-season game.

He reportedly sustained the injury in the playoffs and was not the only Sharks affected by injuries. Joe Thornton (cruciate ligament and medial collateral ligaments in his left knee), Patrick Marleau (broken thumb), Tomas Hertl (broken foot),  Joonas Donskoi (separated shoulder) and Logan Couture (facial fracture) were all dealing with injuries in the playoffs.
