A National Hockey League veteran may be on the verge of cashing in with a massive new contract.

While there has been no official announcement as of yet, Columbus Blue Jackets insider Aaron Portzline of The Athletic is now reporting that the Blues Jackets and Cam Atkinson have discussed potential six and seven year contracts.

The agent for Atkinson, George Bazos, has reportedly discussed deals that carry an average annual value in the neighborhood of $6 million per season, on a 7 year deal that would net Atkinson a deal worth $42 million.

That would be a significant pay raise for his current contract on which he is earning $3.5 million per season but it seems like both sides are intent on getting this deal done. If it does indeed go through Atkinson would become the highest paid player on the Blue Jackets behind goaltender Sergei Bobrovsky.

Atkinson is coming off a 82 game season that saw him record a very impressive 35 goals and 27 assists, and with him having 4 goals and 2 assists already this season the Blue Jackets likely want to get the deal done before the price goes up.
