It did not last long, but it is finally over. Vadim Shipachyov came to the NHL before the start of the 2017-18 season, in hopes to become a franchise player for the new expansion team Vegas Golden Knights

The fairytale ended up being a nightmare for the 30-year-old Russian forward who requested a trade out of Vegas, only to demand a way out of his contract to move back home to Russia and be able to get back into the Kontinental Hockey League.

His wish came true today, as reported by NHL insider Pierre LeBrun. His contract is officially terminated and Shipachyov has voluntarily retired from the NHL.

However, since Shipachyov retired, then the Golden Knights retain his NHL rights until he turns 35. He will move to the voluntary retirement list and his full contract will be cleared from the Knights salary cap.

Good news for him though: he will now be allowed to seek out a new contract in the KHL.
