Breaking: Oilers claim player off waivers!
Twitter

On Thursday, the Carolina Hurricanes announced that the club placed goalie Scott Darling and forward Valentin Zykov on waivers with the intent to assign them to the AHL’s Charlotte Checkers.

However, the Edmonton Oilers had other plans.

On Friday morning, the Oilers claimed Zykov off waivers from Carolina.

The 23-year-old was the goal-scoring king back in the American Hockey League last season, however the young man has gotten off to a rough start in this first season in the NHL. After being in and out of the lineup through the first month of the season, he was assigned to the Checkers on a conditioning stint in November.

Zykov had just three assists in 13 games with the Hurricanes this season after recording seven points in ten games with the club last season. He was signed to a two-year, one-way contract extension over the summer. He has totaled 11 points (4g, 7a) in 25 career NHL games with Carolina.

A change of scenery could greatly benefit the young winger and a chance to play along with players like Connor McDavid and Leon Draisaitl could be a major boost to his confidence. As mentors, they are sure to teach Zykov a few tricks.

The addition of Zykov gives the Oilers an active roster of 24, which means that a corresponding move is required in Edmonton.

UPDATE: The Oilers have assigned forward Patrick Russell to the AHL's Condors.

Three other players were on the waiver wire yesterday with Zykov, however, they all clear on Friday. Therefore, his former teammate Darling will be reassign to the AHL where he will be able to boost his confidence.

Nikita Soshnikov and Ben Street also cleared the waiver wire today.
