Breaking: Oilers expected to terminate the contract of one of their players.

There is a very curious development in Edmonton and one that does not bode well for the Edmonton Oilers organization.

On Wednesday the Oilers announced that they were placing 22-year-old Russian defenseman Ziyat Paigin on unconditional waivers, presumably with the intention of terminating his contract.

The move comes as a complete surprise and is devastating for an Oilers organization that has struggled to find quality depth on the blue line, especially when you consider that Paigin was ranked as one of the Oilers top 5 prospects if not higher than that.

It's unclear what has caused the rift between the two sides, but there is a belief that Paigin will be looking to return back home to play in the Kontinental Hockey League rather than look for another National Hockey League organization, although that has not been officially confirmed at this time.

What makes the report even more curious is the fact that the Oilers have since deleted their post regarding the news, although it still appears as though Paigin's contract will in fact be terminated.
