The Edmonton Oilers appear to have made their decision, at least that will be the case if they get their way.

We now have two very solid sources reporting that the Edmonton Oilers have officially made an offer to former Detroit Red Wings general manager Ken Holland, this in spite of the fact that some early reports suggested that Holland had turned down the job already. This is especially significant given that there have been all kinds of rumors swirling around the Edmonton Oilers regarding this potential hire, although it appears that a decision still has yet to be made form the side of Ken Holland.

First, according to a breaking news report from Sportsnet National Hockey League insider Mark Spector, the Oilers have officially offered Ken Holland a whopping $25 million dollars to take over. presumably, as the next general manager of the Edmonton Oilers franchise. That breaks down to a 5 year deal that will pay Holland an average annual value of $5 million per year, although how his salary breaks down year by year doesn't really matter given that there is no salary cap for general managers.

I suspect that this news will receive a mixed reception from the fan base in Edmonton as there is clearly a segment of the fan base that places great value on Holland's decades of experience in the National Hockey League, while another segment of that same fan base fears that this will continue the tradition of the "Old Boys Club" in Edmonton. That being said this offer of $25 million really does not mean a great deal unless Holland accepts it, which he has not done yet.

It does not sound like we will have to wait very long to get an answer from Holland however. Although there has been no time frame placed on a decision from Holland, Mark Spector is reporting that he expects a decision "shortly" which would appear to indicate that it won't be long before fans in Edmonton have an answer here. At this time it is unclear if Holland would become the president of hockey operations for the Oilers or simply take on the title of general manager as both have been rumored at times in recent weeks.

Stay tuned as we will be bringing you updates on this developing story.
