Breaking: Oilers issue a harsh threat after charity ticket controversy.

This is how an NHL team should respond.

For a lot of fans the reality of attending games in the National Hockey League just isn't financially viable, especially for fans who would have to bring multiple members of the family along.

So when the Oilers announced that tickets to the watch party at Rogers Center would be just $5 dollars, and furthermore that the proceeds from the event would go to the Edmonton Oilers Community Foundation, it was both a great gift to the fans in Edmonton as well as great public relations for the Oilers organization.

However people quickly became aware of the fact that certain unsavory types attempted to scoop up the tickets in order to greatly inflate the prices by scalping them after the fact. According to a Global News report the tickets could be seen at prices "as high as $47 on Vivid Seats and $55 USD on StubHub," with of course none of the additional proceeds going to charity.

Thankfully the Oilers did a fantastic job of responding to the news, and issued a stern warning against anyone attempting to do so.

“If they are attempting to sell it above that, we are constantly looking on the marketplace for those,” said Stew MacDonald, vice president of revenue with the Oilers Entertainment Group

“If we identify who you are, we can guarantee now that any future ticket purchases you have — either for this event or other Oilers’ events coming up — will be voided by Oilers Entertainment Group. So, you are taking significant risk."

“This event is a charity event, it’s intended for families to come out and enjoy Rogers Place at a very low price point and support local communities and it’s important to us that we protect the integrity of that,” MacDonald said.

Since the warning StubHub has pulled all the tickets from their online platform and have also added a message to their website indicating that they will not be reselling tickets due to the event being for charity.

Hopefully this also serves as a deterrent for the future.
