Breaking: Oilers reportedly one of two teams in race for top free-agent defenseman.

Arguably the best defenseman still available on the free agent market is reportedly close to signing a new deal.

In a recent repoirt from 1130 news, reporter Rick Dhaliwal is now claiming that he has been told that unrestricted free-agent defenseman Cody Franson has narrowed the choice down to just two teams.

According to Dhaliwal those two teams are the Edmonton Oilers and the Chicago Blackhawks, although which team is closer to getting the deal done at this point is anyone's guess.

It's interesting to note that both of the teams are expected to be playoff contenders this upcoming season, with both having a realistic chance of competing for a Stanley Cup. One has to wonder if that played a factor in Franson's decision making process, and perhaps even played a role in how long it took for him to find a contract this summer.

More to come.
