This just in, according to a report from Edmonton Oilers insider Mark Spector, the team has signed unrestricted free agent Riley Sheahan.

Check it out:

You may recall that former Oilers forward turned radio host Georges Laraque reported that the Oilers had signed veteran forward Derik Brassard… then Brassard turned around and signed with the New York Islanders.

In any case, Sheahan should help solidly the Oilers’ centre ice position and will likely hold down the third line spot.

UPDATE: TSN insider Ryan Rishaug has confirmed that Sheahan has signed a one year, $900,000 contract with the Oilers.

The 27 year old Sheahan put up nine goals and 19 points in 82 games split between the Pittsburgh Penguins and Florida Panthers last season. The native of St. Catharines, Ontario was originally drafted in the 1st round (21st overall) of the 2010 NHL Entry Draft. In 447 career games split between the Detroit Red Wings, Penguins and Panthers Sheahan has put up 58 goals and 149 points.
