Patrick Marleau was one of the most coveted UFA on the market. The 37 years old spent his entire career with the Sharks, earning 1082 points along his 1493 games with the team. The UFA market opened yesterday and many expected him to resign a deal with the Sharks to complete his career with them. However, it turned much differently than anticipated.

He signed a 3 years, 18,75M$ contracts with the Maple Leafs just minutes ago.

With the stroke of a pen, he becomes the highest paid player in the roster for the Leafs. It opens the door for a problematic situation in Toronto and GM Shanahan must have a card up his sleeve.

6.25M$ a year for a 37 years old is a lot of money. He will end his contract at 40 years old while the likes of Auston Matthews and Mitch Marner will be just breaking the drinking age. Marleau scored 46 points in 82 games last season and many saw signs of slowing down with him. He might have a lot of great hockey left in the tank, but putting so much money on a old guy is always risky. He will provide a ton of experience in the locker room though and it might turn just fine for Toronto.
