Breaking: Penguins sign NCAA playoff hero
Keystone Press

Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford announced today that the team has signed uddrafted free-agent Adam Johnson to a two-year, entry-level contract.

The 22 year-old forward was invited to the team’s prospect development camp in Cranberry, PA last week and evidently impressed the team’s brass enough to earn himself a contract. Johnson capped off an impressive NCAA career this spring with 18 goals and 37 points in 42 games for the University of Minnesota-Duluth Bulldogs.

College hockey fans may remember Johnson’s overtime, power-play goal over Boston University to clinch a berth in the 2017 Frozen Four for the Bulldogs. While it’s not clear yet exactly what Johnson’s role will be with the Pens, the versatile forward can play center and wing, giving the team some much needed flexibility in its bottom nine forward groupings.
