Breaking: Pens team insider hints at imminent major trade!
Twitter

We all know how Pittsburgh Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford keeps busy ahead of the trade deadline, and it might be a busy day for the Pens as some interesting facts were pointed out this morning from the optional skate.

Centre Derick Brassard has been linked to about a half dozen teams and the list is growing. In the past few days, the name of defenseman Olli Maatta has surfaced in trade chatter as well.

On Wednesday morning, the Penguins held an optional skate and team insider Jason Mackay of the Pittsburgh Post Gazette noticed that neither Brassard or Maatta were present. According to him, they usually never take the option to miss the skate.

"Penguins are optional this morning. Crosby, Kessel, Brassard, Dumoulin, Letang and Maatta are not out there. ... Brassard and Maatta are interesting. They usually don't take the option. We'll see," he posted on his Twitter account as the skate took place.

The Winnipeg Jets are rumoured to have kick the tires on Brassard, as they attempted to land the forward last season when Pittsburgh got him from the Ottawa Senators in a three-way trade with the Vegas Golden Knights.

As for Maatta, he was recently linked to the Montreal Canadiens in gossip, but it remains to be seen if Rutherford will be willing to move another blue liner. The Dallas Stars reacquired defenceman Jamie Oleksiak from the Penguins on Monday in exchange for a fourth-rank draft pick.

As Mackay states: we'll see...
