Flyers’ First Round Draft Pick to make NHL Debut tonight

Defenseman Samuel Morin, the Flyers first-round (11th overall) pick from the 2013 NHL Draft has been called up to Philadelphia from the AHL.

With the Flyers out of the NHL post-season, it’s a great time to test out some young talent in the remaining games of the season. While these games may be meaningless statistically, opportunities like this can mean everything to NHL prospects.

Morin, a 21-year-old blue-line prospect from Lac-Beauport, Quebec, is in his second season with the AHL’s Lehigh Valley Phantoms. The 6’6, 203 lbs defender has been skating on the penalty kill, against the opposition’s top lines, and has proven himself a reliable shut-down presence.

Morin has a good eye for the making the zone-clearing play, and supplements his defensive prowess with a heavy slapshot. In 144 AHL games, he has 67 goals and 34 points. Morin amassed 16 goals and 87 points across his four seasons and 200 games playing for Rimouski Océanic in the QMJHL.

An upper-body injury to Radko Gudas in Sunday’s 3-4 loss to bitter rivals the New York Rangers has opened up the spot for Morin’s NHL debut. Both players bring gritty, defense-first play to the ice, so Morin will likely slot right into Gudas’ spot in the lineup.

The Flyers play the New Jersey Devils in a final game in this divisional rivalry for the season tonight, Tuesday April 4th.
