LeBrun: Trade Canucks D-line depth for forward firepower

In an interview with TSN 1040, hockey pundit Pierre LeBrun said he believes that moving a defenceman out of Vancouver could net a worthwhile return, while clearing out the logjam of young blueliners that the Canucks currently have.

“It’s a smart play by Jim Benning to at least look around the Draft and see if there’s an interest in these guys…there’s about 700 teams looking for defence” LeBrun said of Vancouver GM Jim Benning’s comments that he would consider moving one of his young blue-line prospects.

Who has value on the Canucks defence? Alex Edler.

Alright, who has value on the blue line that the Canucks are willing to move?

Young players like Ben Hutton, Troy Stecher, Erik Gudbranson, or even Chris Tanev could potentially be unloaded in exchange for offensive prospects.

“(Ben Hutton’s) name I heard the most before the trade deadline” LeBrun said, adding that some other teams may have bigger names on the trading block, “but at the end of the day, Vancouver has some players to offer and there are teams desperate for D. That plays into your hands”.

LeBrun identified the Buffalo Sabers, Toronto Maple Leafs, Tampa Bay Lightning, Calgary Flames, and Winnipeg Jets as teams with a huge desire for young defencemen.

Going into the offseason it’s a seller’s market for any team with d-men to spare, which is a bright spot in an otherwise dismal season as Vancouver’s rebuild begins in earnest.
