Breaking: Playoff contender may have just lost their starting goaltender.

This does not look good at all.

The New York Islanders may have just seen their playoff hopes take a major hit after watching their goaltender go down in the final moments of their game on Tuesday night. Jaroslav Halak suffered an injury in the final minutes of the third period, forcing Thomas Greiss to come in and relieve Halak for the final five minutes of the game. Thankfully for the Islanders they were able to hold on to their one goal lead and win 2-1 over Pittsburgh.

There's been no word yet on how serious the injury to Halak is, and luckily for the Islanders Greiss has been making a strong case as of late that he deserves to be the Islanders #1 goaltender, posting a .930 save percentage and a 2.20 goals against average on the season through nearly 30 games now, some very solid numbers.

However the loss of depth in net could still be a major factor in the playoffs, especially if Greiss struggles under an increased workload, this will certainly be a situation worth keeping an eye on.
