The Carolina Hurricanes have announced that they’ve re-signed forward Derek Ryan to a one year contract worth $1.425 million. The 30 year-old Ryan was the NHL’s oldest rookie in 2016-17, an honor that earned him a nomination for the league’s Bill Masterson Trophy which recognizes perseverance and dedication to the sport of hockey.

In 67 games with the Hurricanes this past season, Ryan scored 11 goals and 29 points. His road to the NHL is a truly unique one. After four seasons in the WHL with his hometown Spokane Chiefs, Ryan played another four seasons of college hockey with the University of Alberta and then bounced around the Swedish and Austrian pro leagues before being signed by the Hurricanes and their AHL affiliate in Charlotte. Regardless of his past, he’s an NHLer now and the Hurricanes made sure to finally give him his due.
