Breaking: Read and waiver wire action
Keystone Press

For better or worse, Philadelphia Flyers forward Matt Read has officially cleared waivers. The 31-year-old was placed on waivers yesterday by the team, but passed through successfully without any one of the NHL’s other 30 teams making a free claim for his services.

It’s expected that Read will report to the AHL’s Lehigh Valley Phantoms, where he’s already played five games this season. In four games with the Flyers this season, Read has gone pointless.

While he can still provide some depth offense, Read’s $3.625 million cap hit makes him too rich for most cap-strapped teams. Hopefully he’ll be able to find his footing this season when he his unrestricted free-agency.
