Breaking: Red Wings pull off a big late night deal and trade Gustav Nyquist!

It appears that we have a big late night trade in the National Hockey League, although it's not quite official just yet.

According to a breaking news report from TSN National hockey League insider Bob McKenzie it now appears that Detroit Red Wings are on the verge of trading veteran forward Gustav Nyquist. In spite of all the talk  and trade rumors surrounding Nyquist in recent weeks it remains surprising to learn that he will indeed get traded after a report from Red Wings insider Ansar Khan initially claimed that Nyquist had no interest in waiving his no trade clause.

That being said though according to Bob Mckenzie the Red Wings have approached Nyquist about waiving his no trade clause and it appears that the Red Wings forward has agreed to waive it for this trade. McKenzie reports that the Red Wings approached him specifically about a deal with the San Jose Sharks and that additionally Nyquist has agreed to waive his no trade for a move to that city. It appears that it may in fact be the fact that Nyquist is waiving his no trade that is holding up the deal. McKenzie reports that there is some paperwork to be processed before this trade can be deemed official.

"Obviously, some paperwork to be processed on the waiver, and a trade call with the league," said McKenzie. "As long as there are no last-minute hiccups, this deal will get done."

Stay tuned for more details regarding this trade.

Update: TSN National Hockey League insider Pierre LeBrun is reporting that the return for Detroit here will be a pair of draft picks, no word yet on what those draft picks will be or whether or not they will be coming in 2019.

Update #2: According to a report from TSN National Hockey League insider Darren Dreger one of the two picks will be a 2nd round draft selection in 2019, while the other will be a third round draft selection in 2020 with some conditions attached to that third round pick. It is unclear at this time what the conditions of the third round are, but I would assume it has something to do with Nyquist being re-signed or the Sharks making a deep run in the postseason.

Update: 30% of Nyquist's salary will be retained.

Update: Sounds like the Bruins missed out on Nyquist.
