Breaking: Red Wings sign gritty veteran to their roster.
Keystone Press.

The Detroit Red Wings apparently felt they needed to add some grit to their line up, and have used the opening day of free agency to do just that.

According to an official report from the Red Wings, the team has agreed to terms on a new deal with veteran bruiser Steve Ott. The Wings did not disclose the details of the deal but according to ESPN insider Pierre Lebrun, the Red Wings will be getting him at a very affordable $800,000.

Ott appeared in just 21 games for the Blues last season, and only recorded two points over that stretch, and he will likely be used in a depth role in Detroit, and will provide head coach Jeff Blashill with a potential tool to protect young stars like Dylan Larkin.
