The Ottawa Senators have not played well since making a blockbuster deal to bring star forward Matt Duchene to their organization and there have been rampant reports that general manager Pierre Dorion is looking to make an aggressive deal.

Multiple National Hockey League insiders have touched on those reports however Ottawa Senators insider Bruce Garrioch recently reported that he expects Dorion to make a deal before the holiday roster freeze.

While the rumors have included a number of players on the Senators roster including Cody CeciDerick Brassard and even superstar defenseman Erik Karlsson, the latest rumors have all focused around forward Mike Hoffman.

While we don't know what teams may be interested in Hoffman at this time, The Athletic's Allan Mitchell believes that the Edmonton Oilers should be at the top of that list. From Mitchell:

The Ottawa Senators appear to be contemplating something rash and a team like the Edmonton Oilers would do well to pay attention. The Alberta team's continuing search for a shooter to place on Connor McDavid's line could be solved with the addition of a pure scorer like Mike Hoffman of the Senators.

Mitchell believes that Hoffman could be the perfect replacement for Edmonton's Patrick Maroon alongside McDavid, and even believes the Senators would be willing to take Maroon in the deal as it would allow the notoriously cheap Senators to save over $3 million in cap space.

The question becomes what other pieces would be added to this deal in order to make it one that both sides would be willing to pull the trigger on?
