One of the National Hockey League's premier players may be absent come the start of the regular season.

A report from Don Brennan of the Ottawa Sun has provided an update on the status of injured defenseman Erik Karlsson and it comes straight from general manager Pierre Dorion.

First the good news. According to Dorion Karlsson is expected to resume skating sometime within the next two weeks, something that would appear to indicate that he is indeed making progress. However it was not all good news.

Dorion also made a comment that appears to suggest that there is a very real possibility Karlsson may not be ready for the start of the regular season, although that didn't seem to phase him.

"If he doesn't start the season, we're not worried," said Dorion.

While he may not be worried, the thought of Erik Karlsson being so severely injured that even a full summer of recovery was not enough for him to rehab may not sit so well with fans of the Ottawa Senators, or fans of one of the NHL's very best defensemen.
