Breaking: Shipachyov blocked trade to rival team!
KeyStone Press

The Vegas Golden Knights / Vadim Shipachyov saga officially came to an end, with the Russian player "voluntarily" retiring from the NHL to return to the KHL.

As it turns out, general manager George McPhee had a trade in place with another team in the NHL for the services of Shipachyov, but the player nixed the deal, refusing to report to said team.

It was recently reported by Sportsnet's Elliotte Friedman that the Anaheim Ducks had attempted to work out a deal for Shipachyov, but it never panned out. If this was indeed the team that had a deal in place with McPhee, then now we know why the trade never materialized.

Shipachyov, who had been signed to a 2-year $9 million deal in the off-season, had only 1 goal in 3 games played for Vegas.

It sure seemed like the language barrier was an issue for the Russian's family - this may serve as a cautionary tale for future Russian stars wishing to cross over to North America.
