It's yet again another sign of just how tough hockey players can be.

With his Calgary Flames eliminated from postseason contention, many of the questions facing Flames star forward Sean Monahan on Friday were not about the Flames, but rather about his participation in the upcoming IIHF World Championship.

Unfortunately for fans of international hockey, Monahan confirmed to the media that he would not be attending the tournament due to a wrist injury. Furthermore Monahan indicated that the injury was severe enough that it would require surgery, making it impossible for him to be ready for the World Championship even if he wanted to go.

“They did ask me and I’d love to go,” said Monahan as per the Calgary Herald. “I’m going to get some kinks out of (his wrist) and be ready to go for next season.”

The former first overall pick has proved himself to be a consistent offensive threat for the Flames, something that earned him a big money deal prior to this season, and his absence from Team Canada's roster will surely be felt despite the fact that there are a number of talented players ready to take his spot.
