Fans in the Buffalo area have just received some coal in their stockings, albeit a few days late.

A breaking news report from the Buffalo Sabres has revealed that their star forward, Ryan O'Reilly, will be out for an undetermined period of time after he was forced to undergo emergency surgery over the holidays.

The Sabres are reporting that O'Reilly had an appendectomy, although exactly when it occurred is unclear as the Sabres are being deliberately vague about both the surgery and the timetable for his potential return to the line up.

O'Reilly is still widely regarded as one of the best two-way forwards in the game, despite playing on a struggling Sabres team and his absence will likely have a major impact on the on-ice product from the organization. O'Reilly has 7 goals and 11 assists in 27 games with the Sabres this season.
