The New York Rangers will have to do without their prized offseason signing Mika Zibanejad after the veteran forward suffered a broken fibula against the Florida Panthers, head coach Alain Vigneault confirmed moments ago.

Zibanejad crashed heavily into the boards behind the net after getting tangled up with Reilly Smith of the Florida Panthers on a back-checking play, with his left leg absorbing the impact:

Zibanejad, 23, was acquired in a trade that sent Derick Brassard and a seventh-round 2018 NHL Entry Draft pick to the Ottawa Senators. The Senators included a second-round pick in 2018 as well.

Off to a great start, the young forward had posted four goals and 14 points in 18 games while leading the team in power play points with 5.

More updates to follow shortly.
