Breaking: Stars and Sabres have made a minor trade.

We have a very minor transaction to announce.

According to an official announcement from the Buffalo Sabres organization, the Sabres have traded defenseman Taylor Fedun to the Dallas Stars organization in exchange from a conditional 7th round draft choice from the Stars. This trade is very minor and will barely make a blip on the radar in terms of transactions for the 2018 - 2019 NHL season but it is now official.

Fedun is an undrafted defenseman that has spent the last several seasons playing at both the National Hockey League level and in the American Hockey League for the Buffalo Sabres and their AHL affiliate team the Rochester Americans respectively. Over the course of the 2016 - 2017 and 2017 - 2018 NHL seasons Fedun appeared in a total of 34 NHL games for the Sabres in which he recorded no goals and 8 assists for a total of 8 points. In spite of a decent showing for the Sabres at the NHL level he has received no playing time in the NHL this season, playing in 9 regular season games in the AHL with the Rochester Americans. Over those 9 games he has no goals and 5 assists for 5 total points and boasts a plus minus rating of +3 on the season thus far.

It's unclear why the Dallas Stars wanted Fedun but they likely view him as a valuable depth option for their own AHL affiliate and they also had to give up very little to get him from the Sabres. The Stard not only gave up just a 7th round pick but it's a 7th round pick that won't be coming for quite some time on top of it. The 7th round pick from the Stars is their 2020 7th rounder and according to the report from the Sabres it also has some conditions attached to it. The Sabres have not reported any specifics regarding those conditions but I would assume it likely has something to do with the number of games that Fedun will be playing at both the AHL and the NHL level respectively, although keep in mind that is purely speculation at this time.

Not a deal that is about to change the future of either franchise.

Update: Sabres insider John Vogl reports that the Sabres only get the pick if Fedun plays in 25 or more games this season.
