The Detroit Red Wings have decided to make everyone in Hockey Town happy this morning. The team will name Steve Yzerman general manager on Friday, as first reported by TSN's Gord Miller.

The current general manager Ken Holland will remain in place as senior vice president of the team.

Early this very morning, the Red Wings have called a press conference for 3pm et with Yzerman, Holland and owner Christopher Ilitch. They will officially name Yzerman as the team's new GM.

Yzerman stepped down as general manager of the Tampa Bay Lightning after building them into a  tire Stanley Cup contender, handing the reins to longtime assistant Julien BriseBois just two days before training camp. It was quite the way to start the 2018-19 season. Despite finishing the regular season with 128 points to become the President's Trophy winner,  the Lightning was eliminated from the playoffs earlier this week by the Columbus Blue Jackets.

When Yzerman announced that he was stepping down as the Bolts GM, he explained that he wanted to get closer to his family and return home to Detroit. It did not take long for fans to imagine that he would eventually return as part of the Red Wings organization, though Holland signed a two-year contract extension at the end of last season to stay on as Red Wings GM.

Yzerman's contract with the Lightning came to an end this season as the team’s senior advisor.

This will be an exciting yet major change for the Red Wings as Holland  as general manager of the Red Wings since 1997.

However, fans will be thrilled get to Yzerman back, he who spent his entire 22-year playing career with the Red Wings and served as captain of the franchise from 1986-2006. He won three Stanley Cups with the team and captured the Conn Smythe Trophy in 1998.
