BREAKING: Surprising Goaltender Choice
Keystone Press

Remember when most Detroit Red Wings fans were begging general manager Ken Holland to trade away goaltender Jimmy Howard?

Many pointed to the fact that close to $10 million of Detroit’s salary cap space is devoted to goaltending, and that Petr Mrazek is the man moving forward while Grand Rapids Griffins goalie Jared Coreau should play backup to the Czech netminder.

In two appearances this season, Howard has somehow managed to shut down his harshest critics. He was simply outstanding against the New York Rangers, stopping 32 of the 33 shots he faced and stood on his head for most of that game. Three days later, he made 30 saves en route to a shutout against the San Jose Sharks, and currently boasts a .984 save percentage and a .50 goals against average.

Remarkable as that may be, all signs point to head coach Jeff Blashill giving Mrazek the nod ahead of tomorrow night’s matchup against the Carolina Hurricanes.
