Breaking: Talented forward to be the target of very unexpected buyout.

Our first thought here us there has to be more to this story, because frankly on the surface of it, it just doesn't make a great deal of sense.

According to a report from Arizona Coyotes insider Craig Morgan of Arizona Sports, the Coyotes have placed forward Antoine Vermette on unconditional waivers for the purpose of using one of their buyouts on him.

The move comes as surprise because the 34 year old veteran put up nearly 40 points for Arizona last season, and further more he comes in at a very reasonable $3.75 million cap hit to a team that is currently over $6 million away from the salary cap, with Vermette on the roster.

The two main takeaways here are the fact that Vermette will almost certainly attract attention on waivers, and perhaps even more interesting, this move points to the fact that general manager John Chayka is clearing space for presumably another move down the line.
