Breaking: Team “pushing hard” to acquire Toronto's #1 pick in the draft.

This would require a monster offer.

It sounds impossible but apparently one National Hockey League franchise believes it can get their hands on Toronto's first overall pick in the draft, and more specifically Auston Matthews.

According to a report from Jimmy Murphy he has been informed by a "reliable source" that the Arizona Coyotes have begun the process of agressively pursuing a trade with Toronto to bring Arizona native Matthews to their franchise.

On the surface this move doesn't seem to make sense for either side, the Leafs don't want to lose Matthews, and if they do the price for Arizona would likely cripple their franchise. The only possible motivation for either team is the marketing aspect for the Coyotes and an overwhelming horde of assets in return for the Leafs.

At a minimum the Lou Lamoriello led Leafs would demand both Arizona's first overall pick and their star defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson, and that may be too heavy a price for the Coyotes to stomach. Nonetheless Murphy claims the Coyotes are making a push.
