The Anaheim Ducks have just made a shocking announcement regarding the health of one of their players.

According to an official release, National Hockey League veteran Patrick Eaves was placed in an intensive care unit last week due to a rare disorder know as Guillain-Barré syndrome.

From the Mayo Clinic:

Guillain-Barre (gee-YAH-buh-RAY) syndrome is a rare disorder in which your body's immune system attacks your nerves. Weakness and tingling in your extremities are usually the first symptoms.

These sensations can quickly spread, eventually paralyzing your whole body. In its most severe form Guillain-Barre syndrome is a medical emergency. Most people with the condition must be hospitalized to receive treatment.

Thankfully the Ducks expect that Eaves will make a full recovery, although wether or not his career may be impacted moving forward by this disorder is currently unclear at this time.

Eaves has released the following statement via the team's official website:

"I want to thank Dr. Robert Watkins Sr. and Dr. Danny Benmoshe for their early diagnosis of my condition, along with the proactive Ducks medical team. Thanks to them and the incredible nurses at Hoag Hospital, I'm on the road to recovery. I've received tremendous amount of support over the last few days, most importantly from my family, friends and teammates. I'm determined to fully overcome this and return to the ice as soon as possible."

This must have been a rather terrifying experience for Eaves, and we wish him a full and speedy recovery.
