Breaking: The Edmonton Oilers have named their new captain.

Many thought that this decision would come later but the Edmonton Oilers are obviously ready to begin their new era now.

Today following an Oilers practice head coach Todd McLellan made the decision to announce the new leadership group for the Oilers, a group that was likely to see a number of changes due to the large number of trades that took place within that organization this summer, and among those named was Connor McDaivd who will take over as the new captain of the Oilers.

For a long time it's been clear McDavid would take over the mantle, the real question was when he would take it, and now we know that the Connor McDavid captained Oilers era begins today. Milan LucicJordan Eberle, and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins will join him as alternate captains.

He joins a long list of NHL legends who have held the position, and it will undoubtedly make it a big responsibility to live up to. The Oilers released a short video to commemorate the announcement of the youngest captain in NHL history.
