Rookie prospect Brandon Tanev will join the Winnipeg Jets ahead of Thursday’s game against the LA Kings.

The 6’ left-winger has been bouncing between the Jets and the Manitoba Moose this season. He was most recently sent back to the AHL on February 22nd, but has been recalled on an emergency basis.

Tanev is primarily a two-way forward, responsible with the puck with the potential to be an offensive threat and playmaker. The 25-year-old from Toronto signed with the Jets at the end of last season following the end of his NCAA career with Providence College.

In 42 games with the Jets this season, Tanev has only managed 4 points (2 goals, 2 assists) and a plus/minus of -6. His production in the AHL has been better (3 goals and six assists in 26 games), suggesting he may not have been ready for the pace of the NHL in his first season out of college.

Injuries suffered in Tuesday’s win against Philadelphia cleared enough room in the Jets lineup that Tanev is getting crack at the big club. Winnipeg is short on defence, with Ben Chiarot and Mark Stuart are listed as day-to-day, along with Paul Postma and Jacob Trouba who went out earlier this month.

Winnipeg will need Tanev to be solid defensively, especially heading into a Pacific-coast road trip that will match the team up against the LA Kings and the Anaheim Ducks in back-to-back games.
