Breaking: Three top young Penguins wingers being mentioned on the trade market

These are brand new names - and completely unexpected.

Kris Letang is at the forefront of the conversation on the Pittsburgh Penguins' rumor mill, but a recent story from The Athletic's Josh Yohe seems to suggest that there is some false news out there - and it's unclear who it's coming from.

That being said, a second source confirmed to Pittsburgh Hockey Now's Dan Kingerski that Letang is very unlikely to be traded at this point, but that some other names have been discussed in his stead.

One of them is rather surprising - Daniel Sprong, a top offensive prospect for the Penguins reportedly has been talked about on the market. When his defensive game is rounded up, he could be a real force on the team, think Kessel-lite. It's surprising then, that they'd consider trading him when he isn't worth a whole lot just yet - and when he could be a veritable player for this team.

The more surprising name is that of Jake Guentzel

"The source instead suggested the Penguins prefer to deal Ian Cole, but injuries may prevent that. Right now, the most likely piece to leave the Penguins is one of their young wingers," Kingerski revealed. "Jake Guentzel, Conor Sheary, and Daniel Sprong’s names were specifically mentioned."

Guentzel was an enormous factor in the Penguins' Stanley Cup victory last season, scoring 13 goals and 21 points in 25 playoff games.

In his first full season in the NHL, he has accumulated 22 points in 38 games thus far, largely playing on either Sidney Crosby's or Evgeni Malkin's wing.

He's on pace for a very respectable 47 points, while on an entry-level deal.

The last name is Conor Sheary - and that one is less surprising. While the winger has undeniable talent, his inconsistency and $3 million price tag have made him expendable for Jim Rutherford.

Now - there's no guarantee that any of these guys get traded, but it's very interesting to know that their names are out there.
