Breaking: Three veterans, two forwards & one defenseman placed on waivers today!

Teams around the National Hockey League are starting to make minor moves to free up roster and cap space as the National Hockey League trade deadline draws near and as is often the case in these scenarios players who fill in depth roles on their teams are often subject to being waived.

On Thursday we had three such scenarios with the New Jersey Devils, Colorado Avalanche and Buffalo Sabres each placing one of their veteran players on the waiver wire.

First the Avalanche have placed 25-year-old defenseman Eric Gelinas on waivers and, while this is merely speculation, it seems highly likely that this is a direct consequence of the succesful claim they placed on former Habs defenseman Mark Barberio .

Joining Gelinas on the waiver wire will be 30-year-old veteran forward Cal O'Reilly of the Buffalo Sabres, who would appear to be the player most likely to remain within his current organization. O'Reilly has floated between the NHL and AHL in the past few seasons and has generally been called on when injuries forced the Sabres to make some call ups.

Last but not least is veteran bruiser Luke Gazdic of the New Jersey Devils. While Gazdic may not seem like a player likely to be claimed on the surface, a team looking to add some edge to their forward group could certainly look at the big man as a potential grit option for the postseason.

While all three men have significant NHL experience under their belts, it remains to be seen if at this stage of their careers they bring enough value to the table to warrant a waiver claim.
