The consequences of a fight on the ice in the National Hockey League can be brutal and this one sure is for the Calgary Flames. It has been announced in a breaking news reports that Flames top defenseman Travis Hamonic has been ruled week-to-week with a facial fracture sustained while fighting Vancouver Canucks blue liner Erik Gudbranson.

You can see the fight in the video above.

Hamonic engaged in a fight with Gudbranson in the first period of his team's 5-2 loss on their season opener after the Canucks defenseman served an interference penalty for hitting rookie Dillion Dube in the neutral zone eight seconds into his NHL career. Hamonic is the type of man to step up for a teammate, but in this case, he met a much bigger opponent than him... After Gudbranson got out of the penalty box, Hamonic had a message for him. However, the Canucks  6-foot-5 blue liner got the best of Hamonic, who stands three inches and 12 pounds away to the 217-pound offender...

But it seemed important to him. Old school hockey. Hamonic wanted to send a message to his young rookie teammate: you’re one of us now, kid, and we’ve got your back.

Some people struggled with the idea that Hamonic had to fight a much bigger opponent than him.

Hamonic left the game after the fight and returned late the first period sporting a plastic frame on his helmet to cover his jaw, however, it has now be revealed that he will need a lot more recovery time.

“I owe him one now,” said Dube to Sportsnet Thursday.

“After the game I sat down and talked to him and I was asking how he was. That shows how big of a leader he is. I can’t thank him enough for what he did. I look up to him because when you do that for a teammate it means a lot, because Gudbranson is a pretty big dude. Let’s hope he gets back as quick as he can.”

The 28-year-old defender had one goal and 11 assists with a minus-9 rating in 74 games with the Flames last season.

Calgary recalled defenseman Rasmus Andersson from the AHL's Stockton Heat on Friday after placing Hamonic on injured reserve.
