Breaking: Toronto places former first round pick on waivers.

The Toronto Maple Leafs have reportedly placed a first round pick of waivers.

After reports initially surfaced indicating that former 6th overall pick in the 2003 National Hockey League Entry Draft Milan Michalek was absent from practice this morning, Sportsnet's Chris Johnston has revealed that the Leafs have in fact waived him.

Michalek was acquired as part of the trade that sent Dion Pahenuf to Ottawa, and while placing him on waivers is a risk, with his current cap hit of $4 million makes it unlikely that any team will claim him.

There's likely more to this story but as the news is just breaking we don't have more to share at this time.

Update: According to ESPN insider Pierre Lebrun the plan is to send Michalek to the American Hockey League should he clear waivers.
