A former two-time Stanley Cup Champion has been sentenced in a drug case stemming from November of 2015 when he was busted with over 175 hydrocodone pills.

According to a report from Milton J. Valencia of the Boston Glove, former National Hockey League player Kevin Stevens has been given three-years probation and has been ordered to pay a $10,000 fine. On top of that, the judge also ordered Stevens to give motivational speeches about the dangers of drug use, feeling that his celebrity status could be used to turn this incident into something positive for others.

Prosecutors wanted Stevens to serve at least one year in prison as per the sentencing guidelines, however fortunately for Stevens he was spared that fate thanks to the judge in the case.

From the Boston Globe:

But US District Judge George A. O’Toole Jr. said he was caught between a need to punish Stevens and a desire to support the rehabilitation of a man whose addiction began after one of the National Hockey League’s worst on-ice injuries.

“The risk of interrupting the progress that has been made is perhaps an unwise risk to take,”O’Toole told a courtroom crowded with Stevens’ supporters.

The injury being refered to hear was a brutal one indeed, when Stevens broke a number of bones in his face on this play:
