The first starting goaltender for the Golden Knights?

Las Vegas may very well have a future goaltender in mind, and that could be bad news for a rival National Hockey League franchise.

ESPN's Craig Custance is now reporting that two high-ranking members of the Golden Knights scouting staff were spotted in Detroit over the week-end, but they weren't there to watch the Red Wings play.

From Custance:

Two Vegas scouts were among those in attendance at Joe Louis Arena on Sunday, including Vegas assistant GM Kelly McCrimmon. The Rangers depth at all positions makes them a team of interest for the Golden Knights, but Raanta certainly has to be on the watch list, with one year left on his contract and Lundqvist the goalie to be protected in New York for the expansion draft.

Custance is referencing Rangers goaltender Antti Raanta who has by and large outperformed Rangers starting goaltender Henrik Lundqvist this season. To be fair to Lundqvist he has had to shoulder literally more than twice the workload appearing in 51 games compared to just 24 for Raanta, but the numbers are also undeniable.

Raanta this season has recorded a 2.30 goals against average and a .921 save percentage while Lundqvist on the other hand has put up a 2.65 goals against average and a .913 save percentage.

The belief here of course is that the Rangers will protect Lundqvist come the expansion draft, short of him waiving his trade protection they would in fact be forced to, and since you can only protect one goalie, that would by default leave Raanta exposed.

Las Vegas may have very well found their man.
