Breaking: Veteran defenseman surprisingly placed on waivers today.
Keystone Press

In a surprising move, the Calgary Flames have quickly placed veteran defenseman Nicklas Grossmann on waivers today.

Grossmann joined the Flames training camp on a professional tryout offer earlier this summer and obviously played well enough to convince the Flames that he warranted the one-year one-way deal worth $575,000 that they signed him to.

Despite that signing, Grosssman has only appeared in three games for the Flames this season, and has no points in those three games and plus minus rating of -4 over that stretch.

It seems unlikely that a team will look to claim him on the wire, but the fact that he brings a wealth of experience and comes with a very negligible cap hit could make him an interesting option for teams looking to plug some depth into their blue line.
